Walker Rugby Club (1890s)

HER Description

Newspapers define the site of a field used for Walker Rugby Club at the end of the 19th century. It cites using the Scrogg Inn as the changing rooms, so it is likely the site was a field over the road which was vacant in the 1890s, or Walker Park. Walker Park appears to be the less feasible candidate as the piece is from 1892 and it had opened a year earlier. There is no mention of the park in the piece, and given it was entirely new you would expect this as it is cited in later years as the home of Walker Neptune Rugby Club. It's also a fair distance to commence and terminate a match.

It was unlikely to be a formal ground, but probably a temporary roped off setting "like jumpers on goalposts kind of formality". The club were established at some point in the 1880s playing against major local teams like Rockcliff. Sadly though, there's no reference to the ground at this stage.
