New Shildon NER Mechanics (1909 - 1950s)

HER Description

NEHL - The first ground for Shildon Railway CC (then known as New Shildon NER Mechanics CC) was located just south west of the Wagon Works at New Shildon. It was set up by the men who worked at the nearby NER works - a common activity for industrial men at that time.

They played in the local leagues throughout their time at the ground, often in intra-matches against other NER teams. A record in the Northern Echo of 1911 states they played a match against North Road NER at New Shildon. North Road was one of the two railway stations in Darlington. At this time the affair was modest at the ground - a small pavilion was constructed with means of access being a long footpath from the east of the wagon works.

This ground was used for the next few decades until the British Railways Staff Association provided a new ground off Hackworth Road. The ground can be seen on aerial imagery in the 1940s.
