HER Description

Quoits and other sports were hosted on a field adjoining the Portland Arms in the 1890s to substantial attendances, making it one of the town's primary sports fields alongside the original Recreation Grounds at this time.

The site was likely the Welfare Institute before it was built a couple of decades later. In June 1898 as per a piece in the Morpeth Herald, large crowds gathered to witness a full programme of sports at the field. Wrestling, pigeon flying, foot racing and quoits were all played here with the backing of a brass band. This supplemented a more regular offering of quoits organised by the landlord, Mr Thomas Forbes, with a prize of £2 for first in later months.

The site is now occupied by housing.
