HER Description
Langwell Crescent was home to Ashington Cricket Club from at least 1892, though there are references to earlier cricket clubs and therefore could have hosted them prior. Ashington Red Rose are noted in the 1880s, but I unfortunately cannot find a reference for where they regularly hosted fixtures. This club, alongside a Victoria Club, amalgamated to form Ashington Excelsior who played at the Recreation Grounds.
At first, this site was a modest field with no facilities and likely just a landscaped and mowed patch. It was convenient however, located very close to the station and many of the new amenities on the High Street. A pavilion was still not added by 1897, but at this stage had 50 active members.
It appears in the 1890s Ashington playyed in the Blyth & District League against other local opponents like Cambois, Nlyth, Morpeth & Backworth. Fixtures also include Benwell Hill, Blagdon, Newcastle Grammar School and Doxford. Interestingly, in 1899 the Ashington UDC Surveyor Alexander Wood was captain. By 1904 the team were playing in the East Northumberland League.
A pavilion was added by the 1910s on the south west corner, alongside tennis courts which were later taken on by the Ashington Methodist Mission. By the 1920s, further efforts were placed to buy out the playing ground which appears to have occurred.
The ground remains in use for Ashington CC as well as womens teams since the 1950s.
