HER Description

Sports were known to have been played in "a field adjoining Mr A Patterson's Blue Bell Inn" from 1886. There is record of Quoits being played here on multiple occasions between locals for money. It is noted by Tony Martin in his piece on the Ambler (https://www.theambler.co.uk/2024/12/26/football-in-amble-1886-2025/) that football was also played at this site, though unfortunately I cannot seem to find a trace of this. It certainly is likely though given the proximity to the village centre. It was the last open space within Amble between the railway and the river by the 1890s, and given the facilities nearby of the Blue Bell, Masons and the church it makes perfect sense to host sport here.

The field was opposite Bede Street, which was only developed in later decades becoming Edwin Street, Oswald Street and Northumbria Terrace.
