Coquet Lights FC, Amble Rovers
HER Description
One of the earliest sites in Amble known to have been used for football is The Braid, alongside the links on the eastern side of town. It was certainly used by April 1887, when Amble Coquet Lights played "two 45s" on The Braid against Longhirst and lost 9-0. They also featured a reserve teams who often played against other local compositions like the Alnwick Working Mens and the Alnwick Ravens. They remained under this guise until 1889, when they became Amble FC until joining the East Northumberland League in 1895.
In the same month, it was also used by Amble Rovers Juniors against Broomhill Dewdrops, with a crowd of about 600 spectators turning out for the Easter Monday occasion. It was played with 30 mins in each half, though the tuffty nature of the grass was said to have handicapped the players. It means we can presume the senior Amble Rovers also played here.
The largest part of the Braid in those days was up by the current boat house, so I imagine football was played there before development. It was later dredged to allow for shipbuilding
