Coquet Lights FC (1887 - 1889)

HER Description

Amble Links was the first known site where football was played in the town by an amateur club. Football under association rules came to the area in the 1880s, and the first club was Coquet Lights (named after the lighthouse) who called the links home. They were established in 1886 or 1887, with their first recorded match against North Seaton in the Alnwick Challenge Cup. They also featured a reserve teams who often played against other local compositions like the Alnwick Working Mens and the Alnwick Ravens. They remained under this guise until 1889, when they became Amble FC until joining the East Northumberland League in 1895.

Given the location of the quarry and cemetery, they likely played in front of Amble Link Farm near Gordon Street. There was no formal pavilion or clubhouse, so I imagine a local residence was used for facilities.
