Amble Golf Club

HER Description

A short 9 hole golf course was established at Amble Links in 1911. A piece from the Morpeth Herald of 02/06/1911 reports on the formal opening which unfortunately landed on a day of torrid rainfall. It was well attended, with David Deuchar presiding over the celebrations wishing it a prosperous future. He took to the tee for the first ball and announced the opening at this point.

A small wooden pavilion was constructed near Blackwood Street as seen below, and the course straddled around the cemetery which was in the centre of the complex. It was relatively rugged and not a course in the modern sense with sandpits and finely sculpted greens. Instead it appears to just be a series of holes and tees with a par of 66.

The first handicap competition was played on the 21st June 1911 with 38 entries, and David Deuchar presented a challenge cup to the club and went on to be played annually.

The club sadly came to an end in 1958. Previous wartime defences hindered smooth running as the greens were destroyed. Later, the Amble Urban Council acquired the lands and attempts to buy new land failed. The Deuchar cup previously mentioned was handed to the Amble Boys Club, and with the bank balance of £38 they bought a bench at the head of Queen Street for the town. There is no visible sign of the course today and the pavilion is no longer.

Thanks to Golfs Missing Links for their detailed page on the club. My own research is complimented by theirs who go into greater depth on the sporting side: https://www.golfsmissinglinks.co.uk/index.php/england/north-east/northumberland/311-amble-golf-club-northumberland#:~:text=The%20club%20was%20founded%20in,the%20station%20to%20the%20course.
