Alnwick Percy Rovers
HER Description
This site is the most likely candidate to be the first home ground of Alnwick Percy Rovers FC, formed in 1892 as noted by a report on John Whinham - chairman of the North Northumberland League Committee. The club are noted in 1900 to have played at the "South Road Ground" in a match against Newcastle NER, which narrows down the site between Alnwick Railway Station and Willowtree Cottages. The rectangular piece of land opposite the gas works and between the Alnmouth branch and Cornhill branch proves to be the most convincing site to host this local football team.
The first record of the Percy Rovers comes in 1898, when they played Ashington away in a friendly match. Records continue to note games against Berwick Athletic, Longhoughton and Alnwick with the 2nd team playing an assortment of local rivals. It appears their junior division played in the Northumberland Junior Cup against teams across the region.
By 1900 the club entered the North Northumberland League but by 1905 with minnows in the Newcastle & District Amateur League after abandoning the Border League. I can't imagine the travel helped their finances much. With this, they ended up at the bottom of the table and had a deficit on their balance sheet in this year. A piece in the Alnwick Guardian notes a pavilion was constructed at their ground.
The Percy Rovers had become defunct by 1913, hence the difficulty in tracing this ground.
