Acklington CC

HER Description

A cricket ground was laid at this site in the late 1930s, as per a newspaper report from the Morpeth Herald on the 17th September of that year.

Acklington Cricket Club had existed for long before, since at least 1888, but finding their original ground has proved fruitless. It may be the case they had no formal ground and played wherever was vacant at the time. This is given credence by the aforementioned newspaper stating that the club had a credit balance of £40 and it was "decided to lay a ground during the coming winter and to secure a pavilion", implying no such thing had been founded yet.

From thereon, they applied to play in the 2nd division of the Alnwick & District League against clubs like Felton, Bedlington "A" and the 2nd teams of Stobswood, Warkworth and Amble.

The ground is shown on the 1944-1970 series map with an inverted L shaped pavilion accessed from the main road. The ground was fenced off in the corner of the land and was quite rudimentary. It is not known how long they played here, but would be presumed until around the 1970s. There is no trace of the ground or pavilion today.

Thank you to Andrew McQuillen for providing a heads up of the site.
