Description (or HER record listing)
NEHL - Two "old coal shafts" are located at Coal House, on Coal Burn - a tributary of the River Font. Given the name of the burn its reasonable to suggest coal has been worked on its banks for centuries, but the tangible evidence we find here suggests a small landsale working perhaps from the 19th century. The shafts are located on the south bank within the wood itself. There is no suggestion of anything more than a primitive working, perhaps supplementing the quarry workings or for Newton Underwood farm.
A heap is also visible on the 1890s map.
