Description (or HER record listing)

Very little is known about this working just south west of Alnwick town. Hobberlaw Colliery was named after the hill and farmstead which stand very close by. It was very likely associated with the lime industry, given "Hobberlaw Lime" is advertised in papers through the 19th century and possibly extracted next door at various quarries nearby. There is a lime working centre next to High Hobberlaw farm in the 1860s, with limekilnes featured. A path leads directly between this and the colliery.

In 1869, the lime works and colliery were sold together alongside Shilbottle Colliery at the Queens Head Hotel in Newcastle, which confirms the relationship.

The colliery appears to have been on its last legs in the 1860s and totally disappears by the 1890s. On ground level there does not appear to be any indication of the site.
