Description (or HER record listing)

The Jane Pit, opened in 1790, was one of Walker's most productive and provided the impetus for much of Walker's development alongside the shipyards. It stood on a reasonably small plot between Station Road and Wharrier Street nestled within the terraces, though it had been greatly adapted to fit within suburbia. Before this, it was a very typical colliery on Church Lane, surrounded by multiple terraces and a waggonway leading from here to the Tyne. It was also connected directly to the B Pit on Mitchell Street which was defunct in the second half of the 19th century.

As its zenith in 1905, the whole of the Walker Colliery catalogue employed over 1300 people, with the Jane Pit a good chunk of this sum. They provided coal for gas, domestic use as well as industrial and is part the reason the collieries were able to flourish.

It was also the site of multiple terrible tragedies. 1887 was the most recent and like many due to firedamp. 8 lives were lost on the 24th October, and a memorial stands in the Walker Church Yard.

The site remained in operation until 1920. A great firesale was had at the store yard to sell all the materials including engines, fish plates, stoves, propping machines, multiple portable engines, circular saws, furniture all totalling around £3000. The boundary of the site is still explicit but has been claimed for housing.
